Lani Taga

Lani Taga is a proud Kamilaroi and Yorta Yorta woman based in Echuca (Wollithiga) on Yorta Yorta Country. She is a multidisciplinary artist with a deep passion for creative First Nations arts-based practice, particularly Traditional Weaving. Lani’s artistic journey began in her early 20s, exploring various mediums such as lino cuts, painting, and clay work before discovering her love of weaving. Under the guidance of Aunty Marilyne Nicholls and Aunty Denise Morgan Bulled, she is learning the processes for Traditional Weaving with raffia, a practice she is continuing to help keep alive.

For Lani, weaving is more than an art form, it is a meditative and healing practice that strengthens her connection to Culture, Identity and Country, and to the important waterways of her ancestral lands. Her works range from earrings and headpieces to vases and wall hangings, each piece carrying the stories and traditions of her community. She has exhibited many of her works to share the significance of Traditional Weaving as both an artistic and cultural practice.

Through her weaving, Lani honours the importance of water to her people, from fishing to harvesting grasses for traditional Dillybags and Fish Traps. She finds joy in sharing her knowledge and continuing the legacy her ancestors have passed down for generations.
